Comfortable apartments in the center of Poznań – perfect for international guests

19 of August 2024

Poznań, a vibrant city in Poland, is home to the U.S. Army's permanent garrison. The first of its kind in Poland and the eighth in Europe, this unit provides comprehensive support to the infrastructure for U.S. soldiers stationed in the country.

What is behind the name “Camp Kościuszko”?

The U.S. Army’s V Corps, operational in Poznań since 2020, is tasked with managing and directing American military outposts across Poland. The “U.S. Army Garrison Poland”, named "Camp Kościuszko" in July 2022, honors Tadeusz Kościuszko, a hero celebrated by both Poland and the United States.  Kościuszko, known for his leadership in Poland's fight for independence, also played a significant role in the American Revolution. The garrison's name is a tribute to his legacy, symbolizing the deep ties between the two nations and reinforcing the strong Polish-American relationship. Situated at Bukowska 34, the garrison is a point of pride for Poznań, which warmly welcomes its American allies.

This is the second "Camp Kościuszko" in Polish history. The first, "The Kościuszko Polish Army Training Camp," was set up during World War I in Niagara-on-the-Lake, near the U.S.-Canadian border. There, over 22,000 Polish volunteers were trained to join the Blue Army, also known as Haller's Army (named after General Józef Haller, its commander), which was formed in France with the approval of the French government.  This camp operated from 1917 to 1919.

The Mission of "Camp Kościuszko"

The primary mission of the U.S. garrison in Poznań is to oversee and coordinate the activities of all U.S. ground forces throughout Europe. This includes collaboration, operational planning, full synchronization of NATO command with other allied nations, and integrating U.S. forces in Poland with the Polish Armed Forces.

The camp employs over 100 civilian personnel alongside military staff, tasked with supporting the needs of the thousands of American soldiers stationed at 12 bases across Poland. This work involves ensuring adequate supplies and deliveries, providing legal assistance, handling postal services, and importantly, facilitating real estate transactions.

Initially, the rotational presence of U.S. troops was planned for nine months, but this has been extended to a minimum of one year at “Camp Kościuszko.”
